The Sanctity of Silence
Classes 6A and 6B recently participated in a sponsored silence in aid of the ALS
Foundation. The aim was to raise as much money as posible by staying silent for 24
hours. Participants were given only three opportunities to speak during the day, once
at breaktime, once at lunchtime and for one hour after school allocated by parents. At
the end of the day Grade 6 raised over 1100 euros.
Primary 6 teacher, Chris Knight said of the participating students. “It was a fantastic
effort by everybody involved. Staying silent for 24 hours was for some of the students
incredibly difficult, but everyone perservered to the best of their ability. Trying to teach
whilst not talking opened my eyes to how I as a teacher, communicate with my students
and how we use speech in regular everyday life.”
Participating student Gala Abellan said, “The sponsored silence was a unique way of
raising money for a very good cause. It was a lot of fun and not very difficult (for me!)”
Another student disagreed however. Eric Strassle said, “It was really difficult staying
silent for a whole day, because I really wanted to talk to people but I couldn´t. It was
very funny however to see people trying to speak with their hands!” Representatives from Primary 6 receive the thanks of EIC
Well done Grade 6! A fabulous achievement! Managing Director, Jaume Vilella Bach.
